In honor of the epic "watch my character make an ass of himself" thread, I have decided to complete the sex meme for Joe.
1. Does your character believe in true love or soul mates? Love at first sight?
Soul mates, yes. Love at first sight? No. Love is based on a deep understanding of another person, which you just can't get from only one look. There can be an initial attraction on first sight that eventually leads to love, but not love itself.
2. Are they or have they ever been in love?
Lol no.
3. What are their general feelings about sex?
Ho boy. He doesn't think sex is what God wants for him right now, especially as the sex he thinks God wants for him (with a woman, preferably one that he is married to), he doesn't want. If he weren't gay, he'd be a lot more open to having it before marriage, and may have even had it by now. As is, however, he's using "waiting for marriage" as an excuse. He's not abstaining from sex with women because he doesn't want to, he's just waiting for the one. Mmhmm. He's glad that none of his friends pressure him into having sex, although he does get a lot of teasing about how he is too good for his own good and ought to live a little.
Honestly, he thinks about it a lot if he doesn't watch himself, which is why he's almost constantly watching himself and trying to keep himself from thinking any impure thoughts. Sex is an intriguing mystery to him, though, and he desperately wants to experience it for himself someday. According to people he knows who have had it, it's great. He's happy for them, if secretly quite jealous. He's expecially jealous of the gays he knows who have been able to accept that part of themselves; he still thinks that his "impure thoughts" are things that happen to him, rather than part of who he is.
4. How do they feel about sex without love?
Very, very, very bad. Sex is sacred, and should only be shared with someone with whom you are in a committed relationship, preferably a married one. Without love, sex is just an act, which goes against everything he ever learned about it. It's more than an act, it's an expression of pure love, a gift from God, and not something to take lightly.
5. What about sex before marriage?
He is not too happy about this either. If you liked it enough to fuck it, then you should have put a ring on it. He's uneasy about having sex with someone without an official, church-recognized promise that they will at least try to stay for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, blah blah blah. What's going to stop them from using and leaving? Of course the problem with this is that he's not going to be able to marry anyone that he actually wants to have sex with, not if he stays in New York.
6. What counts as cheating and is cheating forgivable?
While I'm sure the physical aspect of cheating would hurt him, I think emotional straying would have more of an impact, like with Allison's boys. So any sort of more-than-platonic attachment to another person would count. Joe would take a cheater back, as all sins are forgivable, especially if you accept Jesus into your heart, but adultery is still a sin. I don't think the relationship would survive with that kind of a breach of trust.
7. Have they or would they ever cheat?
He has not cheated! But I'm actually not sure he wouldn't, believe it or not. He is just so clueless about sex and things of that nature that even when he does accept who he is, what he wants, etc., there will be a part of him that thinks, "I'm already a sinner, so it doesn't matter if I make it worse." Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he ever found himself in a situation wherein he was the "other man," if only because I wound up taking so much inspiration from Joe Pitt from Angels in America, and that's what happened to him.
8. Are they a virgin?
Duh. And despite his claims, he actually does feel weird about being one at nearly 26. Which is still more than eight years less than the oldest virgin in the game, as far as I know, but still.
9. First partner? Most recent?
Um, his hand? But he doesn't jerk off very often at all. Masturbation is a mortal sin.
10. What sort of experience do they have with sex?
He has dated two women. He never got beyond making out with his high school girlfriend, but the nameless soprano that he dated when he first joined NYCO eventually got him to take her shirt off and let her blow him, which is... close to sex? I think she hoped that if she got him that far, nature would take over and he'd just do her, but. Well. That's the tricky thing about nature. She dumped him because he wouldn't, and she thought that was a sign that he didn't really want to be with her. Smart girl. He also kissed one of his male friends his freshman year of college, but that was kind of a fail on multiple levels.
11. Do they have any fetishes or fantasies?
He would like to join the Mile High Club someday.
12. How comfortable are they with their body?
I don't think he is. Part of it is that he's fairly certain that his penis has its own agenda, so he's not to happy with that. Another part is that he has memories of being a mutant with enhanced musculature, if not precisely super-strength. He works out two or three times a week, but there's still no way he's going to compare to the teenager living in his head. Which sucks.
13. With their partner's body?
For the first few times at least, he's going to be in a state of mild shock, but as with many things, there is a learning curve, and I can see him ascending this one rather rapidly, since I can't imagine there's much to learn about the male body that he doesn't know from having one.
14. Who gave them "The Talk"?
Oh come on, who do you think? His preacher dad. In Sunday school. With like twenty other kids around. And it consisted mostly of "don't do it, you know God is watching you and judging you, and you'll get thirty different STDs, have a bastard child, and go to hell."
15. Do they have any special skills?
He can recite Scripture in the sack, if that's what you're into. And I'm just saying, but he can make his voice sound like pretty much anything.
16. Post-sex habits? Weird habits? Anything else?
When he finally does lose his virginity, he will probably wake up the next morning, have a crisis of faith, and lock himself in the bathroom.
